Histopathological Pattern of Ovarian Tumour in Maiduguri, Borno State: A Five Year Retrospoective Study

Context: Ovarian tumours are common reasons for referral to the gynecologist. The management of patients with ovarian tumour depends among other factors, on the histological type of the tumour. Information regarding the histopathological distribution of ovarian tumours from developing countries needs to be constantly updated.
Aims: To review the histopathologic pattern of ovarian tumours in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Settings and Design: This was a 5-year retrospective review of all ovarian tumour specimen received at the histopathology department of UMTH from 1st September 2015 to 31st August 2020.
Statistical Analysis Used: Data was analysed using Statistical Product for Service Solutions software (SPSS), version 25 (IBM Chicago III, USA).
Methods and material: All data are presented as absolute values and percentages. Figures and simple percentages presented as tables were used to depict the findings.
Result: A total of 204 samples were analyzed, with age range of 2-70 years. Surface epithelial tumour accounted for 39% of cases, followed by functional cyst 34%, while sex cord stomal tumour accounted for 9% of cases. The commonest malignant ovarian tumour was granulosa cell tumour, seen in 7% of patients. The commonest presentation was abdominal pain and swelling accounting for 52% and 27% respectively irrespective of the type of tumour. A case of collusion tumour and one case of synchronous tumour were encountered.
Conclusion: Benign ovarian tumours are far more common than their malignant counterparts in our environment.
