THE ABSTRACT
Cavernous Uterine Haemangioma in a Parturient in South-Western Nigeria. A case report.
Introduction: Cavernous haemangiomas of the uterus are very rare benign lesions of the uterus which can result into intractable uterine haemorrhage and vaginal bleeding, occasionally resulting in debilitation and death of the parturient. A case of uterine cavernous haemangioma in a patient who had total abdominal hysterectomy following significant menorrhagia is presented.
Case Report:
The patient is a 43 year old multipara Para 4+0, 4 alive woman who presented as an emergency case with significant menorrhagia, and subsequently had a total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Hysterectomy specimen was sent for routine histology but the histological report confirmed that it was a case of Cavernous Haemangioma of the uterus.
Conclusion:
Majority of uterine cavernous haemangiomas are incidental findings as the ones which are symptomatic mimic several other clinical conditions heralded by vaginal bleeding, and abdominal swellings. Many other cases of uterine cavernous haemangiomas are asymptomatic. Hysterectomy is usually the definitive mode of treatment for uterine cavernous haemangiomas.
